Press Start Journal: Open CfP July 2019

July 1, 2019

The Editorial Board of Press Start Journal invites submissions to our upcoming issue. Press Start is an open peer-reviewed game studies journal interested in the work produced by current students and recent graduates working in research related to this broad field.

For our next issue we will be continuing our rolling (no deadlines) open call for submissions for full papers. Research articles are expected to be between 3000 and 5000 words in length, but there are opportunities for submitting shorter or longer pieces of work (up to 8000 words including references—note that submissions that are over 8000 words will not be considered).

In addition to rolling submissions, we will be initiating a streamlined submission process. The process will include more feedback and open communication between editors, reviewers, and authors. This includes feedback on the abstracts, as they are an important part of academic writing that is often overlooked.

For this issue, Press Start will accept abstract proposals (250-500 words) by July 19, 2019. Abstracts will be given feedback from the editorial board by August 2. Revised abstracts are due by August 16.

Accepted abstracts will be announced August 30, with full papers (3000-5000 words, 8000 max.) due for peer-review by November 1. Those who did not go through the abstract feedback process are still welcome to submit full papers to be peer-reviewed for the next issue.

Peer-review is due by November 22, revisions are due by December 13. The second round of peer-review is due December 27. Publication of the issue is planned for January, 2020. Please note that these dates are estimates, but we will try our best to stick to this schedule.

To recap:

July 19th: 250-500 word abstracts due

August 2nd: feedback sent out

August 16th: revised abstracts due

August 30th: accepted abstracts announced

November 1st: full papers due (8000 word maximum)

November 22nd: reviews sent out to authors

December 13th: revisions due (followed by a second round if necessary)

January 2020: planned publication

We hope that the more structured approach will streamline the journey between submission and publication, foster more mentorship, and ensure that students’ work will be published in a timely manner and in its best possible form.

If you have any questions, please post it on the Facebook group (www.facebook.com/groups/ PressStartJournal/), where a member of our friendly and knowledgeable Editorial Board will get back to you, or email the editor-in-chief directly (editor.press.start@gmail.com).

As a student-run journal with an international editorial board, we encourage non-native English speakers to submit their work. The Editorial Board will, to the best of our capacity, help those submitting to meet the editorial guidelines for the journal and a good standard of academic English.
